What is the difference between Erectile Dysfunction and Premature Ejaculation? In this video, Dr. Katelaris clears up some common confusions.
Many men confuse premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction. They are two different conditions. Erectile dysfunction is the inability to confidently initiate and maintain an erection for sexual intercourse. On the other hand, premature ejaculation relates to a man achieving orgasm too quickly. Too quickly to satisfy his partner or to satisfy himself in fact. Now men with premature ejaculation, they may be born with it, what we call primary premature ejaculation. Or it may develop due to psychological factors, such as broken relationships, performance anxiety.
Now premature ejaculation needs to be sensitively discussed with the patient. It’s a big burden for a man and of course it impacts his partner as well. Therefore, we do use medication as well as counseling, but ultimately the couple have to learn to cope with the condition. And by coping I mean that the intimacy of the relationship is not sacrificed by the fact that the man achieves orgasm quickly. Therefore, if orgasm does come quickly in the interaction, it’s very important that the intimacy, the satisfaction of the female partner, continues as part of lovemaking.
Erectile dysfunction is a very common problem. It really affects a man’s self-esteem, his self-confidence. And it’s not just the man, it affects his lady as well. Therefore, if you’re listening to me talk about erectile dysfunction, understand that we know it’s a problem. We know it upsets you. Therefore, come in and let’s talk about it and let’s individualise the treatment to your particular situation.
